Neuro - our mental 'map of the world' in our brain is constructed through images, sounds, feelings, tastes and smells that are filtered through our neurology and stored.

Linguistic - the meaning we make of the world is expressed through our language. This is our personal meaning of the world around us that comes from all the information received in our neurology.

Programming - this is the behaviours that we show as a result of what our neurology has created from everything we take in around us and the language that we then use as a result.

All of the techniques used in NLP are based on these four pillars:

  • building rapport

  • outcome thinking

  • sensory awareness

  • behavioural flexibility

What is NLP?
NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming.
NLP has many uses for self development, businesses and organisations as it creates better communication and interpersonal relationships. Experiencing NLP training can be life changing, but it also provides excellent tools and techniques for coaching and personal and professional development. NLP helps build new goals, create better relationships and enhance business performance.
Below are the presuppositions of NLP - these are presupposed to be true in creating effective communication.
  • The meaning of a communication is the response you get.
  • The map is not the territory.
  • Language is a secondary representation of experience.
  • Mind and body are parts of the same cybernetic system and affect each other.
  • The law of requisite variety (also known as the first law of cybernetics - cybernetics is the science of systems and controls in animals, including humans, and machines) states that in any cybernetic system the element or person in the system with the widest range of behaviours or variability of choice will control the system.
  • Behaviour is geared towards adaptation.
  • Present behaviour represents the very best choice available to a person.
  • Behaviour is to be evaluated and appreciated or changed as appropriate in the context presented.
  • People have all the resources they need to make the changes they want.
  • 'Possible in the world' or 'possible for me' is only a matter of how.
  • The highest quality information about other people is behavioural.
  • It is useful to make a distinction between behaviour and self.
  • There is no such thing as failure; there is only feedback.
